Visiting Melbourne

Perhaps you’ll be spending time in Melbourne before or after the conference. Maybe you’ll be travelling with family members who plan to explore Melbourne while you’re at the conference. Melbourne is a great city, with many interesting things to see and do. Ideas include:

–       Melbourne Museum (museumvictoria.com.au)
–       National Gallery of Victoria (www.ngv.vic.gov.au)
–       Scienceworks (museumvictoria.com.au/scienceworks)
–       Queen Victoria Market (www.qvm.com.au)
–       Chinatown (http://chinatownmelbourne.com.au)
–       Immigration Museum (http://museumvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum)

Official tourism websites include:

–       Tourism Victoria (www.tourism.vic.gov.au)
–       Melbourne, Victoria (www.visitvictoria.com)
–       City of Melbourne (www.thatsmelbourne.com.au)

If you would like to take a guided tour of Melbourne or its surrounds there are many tour operators, including:

–       Viator (www.viator.com)
–       Adventure Tours (www.adventuretours.com.au)
–       Melbourne City Tours (http://melbournecitytour.com.au)
–       Chocoholic Tours (http://chocoholictours.com.au)

Ours is a fairly small conference so we have not organised activities for accompanying spouses. We hope you’ll find some good ideas on the websites listed above.

Melbourne has an integrated public transport system which includes trains, trams and buses. The Public Transport Victoria website (http://ptv.vic.gov.au) provides more information on services, timetables, and the myki (http://ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki) travel card.

If you need to get from the airport to your hotel, there are a several different shuttle bus services (www.skybus.com.au, www.jetbus.com.au, www.starbus.net.au) or you could take a taxi.

It will be summer in Australia in November, with expected temperatures in Melbourne ranging from about 10 °C to 20 °C (50 °F to 68 °F). The weather can be variable so you may want to bring an umbrella and warm jacket.

We hope you enjoy your time in Melbourne!
