This plethora of physicochemical properties affects how nanoparticles interact in biological environments, including with cells of the immune system. Solid polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) in the viral\u00a0to bacterial\u00a0size range (40nm-1000nm) are an excellent model to study the impact of solid materials in the nano-micro range,\u00a0such as plastics,\u00a0on uptake\u00a0by immune cells as well as downstream effects on inflammation and the immune system in general.\u00a0PSNPs in the viral size range (40-100nm) by themselves\u00a0are rapidly taken up by activating immune cells such as dendritic cells, but\u00a0surprisingly\u00a0do not induce conventional inflammatory pathways. By themselves\u00a0these\u00a0viral sized PSNPs do not induce immune responses,\u00a0however\u00a0robust T and B cell responses\u00a0are\u00a0seen when\u00a0PSNPs\u00a0are used\u00a0as a vaccine delivery platform. Larger particles (500-1000nm), by themselves are\u00a0by contrast\u00a0taken up\u00a0preferentially\u00a0by\u00a0immune cells such a myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC) associated with the induction of immune-suppression.\u00a0This shows that small changes in the nano to micro scale for the size of solid man-made particles such as\u00a0PSNPs\u00a0have significant, unique and potentially divergent effects on the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Presentation by Dr Kirsty Wilson (RMIT University)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":186,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_feature_clip_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"nba-redirect":"","footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[6],"tags":[8,5],"class_list":["post-1399","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-presentations","tag-health","tag-plastics"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
