The SERD review was covering between 150 and 190 programs.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not that the innovation ecosystem needs more funding from the government,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0that we need to be more efficient\u00a0and coordinated\u00a0with that money.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t\u00a0wait for the government to do things.\u00a0We\u00a0also have a lot\u00a0we\u00a0can\u00a0empower ourselves to do. Organise ourselves, be coordinated, look at how to grow the sector, rather than fighting with each other. Present to the government with real clarity on what\u00a0the gaps\u00a0are\u00a0that no one else will fund, and what is the pathway forward.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Due to programs like the ON Program,\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen a real culture change in the research sector\u00a0\u2013\u00a0from saying \u2018we don\u2019t know how to do this\u2019 to people having a real ambition to commercialise their work. Now we need to figure out how to support those businesses to scale up.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019s\u00a0easy to go to the government and say\u00a0you\u2019ve\u00a0got to invest but they have a limit. We need to activate the private sector, and in its first step, that\u2019s angel investors. How do we help those investors get more comfortable investing in deep tech?\u00a0Then\u00a0the next stage is to encourage more venture capital into this space.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019ve\u00a0got phenomenal people\u00a0and\u00a0phenomenal research\u00a0ideas;\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0just got to unlock them. Translation is how we convert that strength into high-value industries,\u00a0jobs\u00a0and sovereign capability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strong translation pathways create deep tech startups and spinouts in areas such as clean energy,\u00a0space\u00a0and advanced manufacturing, helping build the next generation of Australian industrial champions.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Significant gaps\u00a0remain\u00a0in early-stage capital and specialised infrastructure. The panel highlighted the need for facilities such as ISO-certified pilot manufacturing environments to help deep tech ventures progress from laboratory research to commercial readiness.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researchers do not need to become long-term CEOs to contribute to successful translation.
