Understanding the interaction between CO₂ and wellbore cement requires robust and representative experimental methodologies, as numerous legacy and active wells have exhibited loss of integrity, evidenced by sustained casing pressure and surface gas or fluid leakage. While batch experiments on representative cement plugs are widely used and provide valuable insights into CO₂–cement reactions of dissolution, precipitation, and carbonation, they fail to reproduce in-situ conditions, where (1) lithostatic pressure is decoupled from pore pressure and (2) pressure gradients and fluid flow govern reactive transport processes. As a result, batch tests are inadequate to determine whether cement sealing capacity is effectively preserved or compromised, highlighting the need for more realistic, flow-based experimental workflows.
