Abstract opening:
CO2 storage in deep subsurface formations induces pore-pressure build up with associated changes in the host formation geomechanical stress and strain. Localised stress changes can induce micro-seismicity, and when interacting with fault systems could cause fault reactivation and potential leakage pathways if the fault is previously sealing. Alternatively, if the fault is non-sealing, fluids could migrate up the fault and potentially exit the storage complex. As the number of CO2 storage projects grows globally, interaction with fault systems becomes inevitable.
