Abstract opening:
Regular monitoring of plume movement and updating of plume forecasts is a standard requirement of stakeholders and regulatory frameworks in CCUS projects. The most comprehensive monitoring data is timelapse seismic, which can be expected to be acquired over most projects, though perhaps only at multiyear intervals. Particularly in highly porous saline aquifers, seismic data illuminates the geology very well where gas has displaced brine, and will typically reveals problems or deficiencies in baseline topography and flow models. Updating flow models to honour topography-sensitive 4D seismic data is a challenging problem for full multiphase flow models, and standard reservoir history matching workflows are not well equipped for these uncertainties…
