Abstract opening:
As global efforts toward decarbonisation advance, there is growing consensus that carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies will play an increasingly significant role, particularly given the considerable gap remaining in achieving the 1.5 °C or even 2 °C targets established under the Paris Agreement. In the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, several countries are projected to maintain a reliance on fossil fuels well beyond 2050, making CCS an essential component of their national decarbonisation strategies. However, several countries have limited proven capacity for geological CO₂ sequestration, constraining their ability to implement large-scale CCS domestically. In contrast, Australia possesses substantial volumes of proven storage capacity, positioning it as a potential hub within a regional CCS value chain. The Northern Territory has been identified as a strategic location where liquid CO₂ could be transported by ship and subsequently sequestered in nearby geological formations.
