Abstract opening:
There is current interest in the possibilities for underground hydrogen storage (UHS), and it is important to see whether there are lessons that can be learned for UHS monitoring from developments in CCS. The options for UHS include salt caverns, hard rock caverns, saline aquifers and depleted gas fields. The focus here will be on the last two options, which are also very relevant for CCS. The key similarity is that UHS and CCS in porous media both depend on injection of a gas phase which is less dense than the formation water, and so there is two-phase flow in a porous medium, and buoyancy effects are dominant away from the well. Thus, for containment one needs sites with an adequate sealing formation to prevent upward migration. There exist key differences though…
