Field Trips & Workshops
Preliminary date for the Wager and Brown Symposium is prior to the ISMUMS, on 28th of June
Details are subject to change due to availability, access approvals and minimum numbers. The intention is to run two pre-conference field trips, two days of within-conference excursions, and one post-conference field trip.
Pre-Conference Field Trips
Layered intrusions of the Youanmi Terrane
Trip leader(s): Tim Ivanic (GSWA)
The Meeline Suite of the Youanmi Terrane of the Yilgarn Craton contains several layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions, with its Windimurra Intrusion rivalling the Bushveld Complex in size. This trip will explore the geology and Fe-Ti-V mineralisation of the giant Windimurra Intrusion and associated platinum-group element prospects. The second half of the trip will visit the Narndee Igneous Complex of the Boodanoo Suite; one of few layered intrusions globally hosting cumulus amphiboles. The trip will end with a visit to the Boogardie Orbicular Granite outcrop. Est. 6 days, 20 total attendees.
The Western Pilbara mafic-ultramafic intrusions
Trip leader(s): Steve Barnes (CSIRO), William Smith (CSIRO)
The mafic-ultramafic intrusions of the Western Pilbara Craton have been explored for nickel-sulphide and platinum-group element occurrences for several decades. This trip will visit the nickel-sulphide occurrence at the taxitic Andover Intrusion, explore the geology and mineralisation of the layered Munni Munni Intrusion, and the komatiite occurrence at Ruth Well. Time will also be spent visiting local rock art sites and learning about country through the eyes of local traditional owners. Est. 6-7 days, 30 total attendees.
During Conference Field Trips
There will be opportunities for delegates to attend four within-conference excursions. All four excursions will run in tandem on both Tuesday and Thursday with delegates able to attend all 4 excursions.
Facilitated by Chalice Mining, delegates have to opportunity to visit the Gonneville PGE-Cu deposit to view key intercepts in drill-cores and learn about WA’s most recent orthomagmatic discovery.
Australian Orthomagmatic Deposits at Perth’s Core Library
Facilitated by the Geological Survey of Western Australia, delegates will have the opportunity to view key drill-core intercepts from notable Australian orthomagmatic occurrences including the Panton Intrusion and Savannah Intrusion of the Kimberly, mineralisation in the Jameson Range Intrusion of the Musgraves Province, and more.
The Perth Mint Gold Tour includes a fascinating live gold pour, the world’s largest gold coin and a guided walk through the Perth Mint’s world-class exhibition.
King’s Park Heritage Tour
On this 1.5-hour walking tour of King’s Park guided by Whadjuk traditional owners, delegates will learn about the land, flora and fauna, and its significance to indigenous Australians.
Post Conference Field Trip
Mineralised mafic-ultramafic intrusions of the Albany-Fraser Orogen
Trip leader(s): TBC
The Albany-Fraser Orogen is a site of ongoing exploration for magmatic nickel-sulphide occurrences, particularly since the discovery of the world-class Nova-Bollinger Ni-Cu-Co Deposit. This trip will first explore the regional geology on the south coast of Western Australia before making its way north to the Nova-Bollinger Ni-Cu-Co deposit as well as the Silver Knight, Mawson, and Octagonal nickel-sulphide occurrences. The trip will end with core viewings at the Kalgoorlie Core Farm and a visit to the komatiitic occurrence at Mount Hunt. Est. 7 days. 20 total attendees.
