Community Update – September 2023
SITE SOIL REMEDIATION WORKS
CSIRO has engaged professional consulting firm, Jacobs, to continue soil investigations at the CSIRO Belmont site, located at the corner of Henry Street and Princes Highway.
The soil vapour extraction works were undertaken on our site in the northeast corner during 2019 and 2020, to remove hydrocarbons from the soils within the area. In the July 2020 Belmont Update, we advised that the soil vapour sampling results were acceptable.
To reconfirm the previous results, the EPA Auditor has recommended additional soil vapour sampling be undertaken within and directly adjacent to the excavation and remediation area. The additional work will include installation of new bores, including on our north boundary adjacent to Henry Street. Council approval has been granted for work on the Henry Street nature strip. Work will commence on 7/09/2023 and will be completed within a week (weather permitting). The following is a summary of works:
- Clearance of underground services onsite and within the vicinity of the site (including Henry Street).
- Movement of existing ballast rock material onsite; and
- Vertical drilling of bores onsite and in the vicinity of the site (including Henry Street). Drilling is proposed to be conducted on 11/09/2023 for 1-2 days.
- Traffic management will be engaged for these works.
- No driveway interference is expected.
- Access will still be available through Henry Street.
Following the installation of the bores, sampling activities will take place on site from time to time until early December 2023.
All site works will be undertaken between 07/09/23 to 12/09/23 from 7am to 5pm. Weekend work is not anticipated.
